What choice to make ... FIXED WING FAST-JET / HEAVY JET OR ROTARY ?

 

On arrival at RAFv, you will be enrolled at 1EFTS where you will learn the basic principles of fixed wing flight, air traffic control procedures and navigation. This will last for approximately 10 hours of flying time spread over 8-10 sorties (or depending on your skills). Upon completion, you will fly a checkflight which will be assessed by one of our senior Qualified Flying Instructors. If successful you will graduate and move to:

  1. 1FTS (future career is Fast Jet)
  2. 2FTS (future career is Rotary)
  3. 3FTS (future career is Heavy Jet)

 

1FTS : Here you will build on lessons learned at 1EFTS, and be taught new skills and procedures in the Tucano for Advanced Flying Training – Garrett TPE331-12B turboprop . Course duration a minimum of 5 hours flying time. As with 1EFTS, you will fly an assessed checkflight with a senior QFI and if successful you will move to 4FTS.

 

2FTS : Here you will build on lessons learned at 1EFTS, and be taught new skills and procedures in the Squirrel HT1 helicopter for Advanced Flying Training – Ariel 1D1 gas-turbine engine. Course duration a minimum of 5 hours flying time. As with 1EFTS, you will fly an assessed checkflight with a senior QFI and if successful you will move to 78Sqn and report for the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) training.

 

3FTS : Here you will build on lessons learned at 1EFTS, and be taught new skills and procedures in the King Air B200 for Advanced Flying Training – Two Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42 Turboprops. Course duration a minimum of 5 hours flying time. As with 1EFTS, you will fly an assessed checkflight with a senior QFI and if successful you will move to the squadron of your choice and report for the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) training.

Your options are 8 Sqn – 24 Sqn – 101Sqn – 201Sqn.

 

4FTS : Here you will build on lessons learned at 1EFTS & 1FTS, and be taught new skills and procedures in the Hawk T1/1A for Advanced Fast-Jet Flying Training – Rolls-Royce Turbomeca Adour turbofan pilot training. Course duration a minimum of 5 hours flying time. As with 1EFTS, you will fly an assessed checkflight with a senior QFI and if successful you will move to the squadron of your choice and report for the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) training.

Your options are 1 Sqn – 3 Sqn – 9Sqn – 111Sqn.

 

 

FAST TRACK ... ?

 

For the more experienced pilot joining us, you may have the option of taking our fast track checkride facility. This will involve you planning and flying a sortie in your chosen squadrons type. This will be an intensive flight covering every aspect of FTS and a few surprises thrown in along the way. These flights will be assessed our Grade 3 QFI’s who will decide on the outcome of your flight. If succesfull you will graduate to your chosen squadron OCU straight away.
