The home of the Nimrod (MR2) |
Hello and welcome to RAFv Kinloss, the home of 201 Squadron. We are equipped with the BAe Nimrod MR2 and fly a multitude of roles within RAFv. We strive for professionalism and are always looking at new ways to improve how we do things.
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW). Aerial patrols monitoring the activities of submarines.
Anti-Surface-Unit Warfare (ASUW). ASUW covers a wide range of operations involving surveillance and reconnaissance missions that may culminate in the targeting and attack of enemy vessels.
Search and Rescue (SAR). Nimrods can support SAR operations by assisting in the detection and location of personnel in emergency situations, providing a communications relay with attending helicopters.
We aim to maintain an aircraft on one hour readiness for search and rescue, primarily for downed military aircrew and military maritime incidents, however, Nimrods are tasked by the Air Rescue Coordination Centre, co-located at Kinloss, to attend many civil incidents. Such activity may include carrying out searches, assisting search and rescue helicopters or acting as on-scene commander at major incidents such as the Piper Alpha oil-rig disaster. The aircraft can operate as low as 200 feet whilst over the sea.
We take part in most RAFv deployments, including the recent UN Bosnia operation which found us carrying out intensive patrols of the Adriatic, intercepting shipping, keeping tabs on nosey Russian submarines, assisting in Command and Control and co-ordinating Search and Rescue operations for downed pilots. We are playing a key role in the permanent detachment to the South Atlantic.
Our area of UK operations is extensive, our training more so. Our enthusiasm knows no bounds and our pilots are always willing to help you. We are willing to assist in any squadron training if you think we would useful.
201 will always try do our best to keep the UK and its interests safe by keeping an (almost) constant watch over RAFv airspace.......
Hic et ubique - 'Here and everywhere'
